What gets removed

  • Editor metadata, comments and namespaces added by Illustrator, Inkscape, Sketch and Figma.
  • Empty groups, unused <defs> and default attribute values.
  • Excess decimal places in coordinates, controlled by the precision slider.
  • Verbose path data, rewritten with shorter relative commands.
  • Whitespace between tags.

Choosing a precision

Precision is the number of decimal places kept in coordinates. 3 is safe for almost everything. Icons drawn on a 24-unit grid usually look identical at 1–2. Detailed illustrations and maps may need 4+. Check the right-hand preview as you move the slider.

When to optimize

Optimize the final file you ship to a website or app, and keep an unoptimized source for editing. To make changes first, open the file in the online SVG editor. To recolour or resize without editing, use the SVG color changer or resize SVG tools.

Questions

How much smaller will my SVG get?

Files exported from design tools often shrink by 30–80%, mostly from editor metadata, redundant groups, long decimal numbers and verbose path commands. Hand-written or already minified SVGs shrink less.

Is this the same as SVGOMG?

Both use SVGO, the standard open-source SVG optimizer. This tool runs SVGO's default preset in your browser with a precision slider, multipass and a responsive option, and lets you open the result in a full SVG editor.

Will optimization change how my SVG looks?

The default preset is designed to be visually lossless. Very low precision (0–1) can shift small details, so compare the two previews before downloading. The viewBox is always kept.

What does "multipass" do?

It runs the optimizer repeatedly until the output stops getting smaller. It is slower on huge files but usually squeezes out a few more bytes.

Are my files uploaded?

No. SVGO runs entirely in your browser.
